It is a two week program that creates a time and place where the veteran and his/her family receive uninterrupted care by briefly disconnecting from their everyday lives. This time off was to break everyday routine which make habits hard to break. The program took place in June, it is not only a therapeutic intervention for emotional and behavioral change but it also impacts on the economic sphere of the person and family. This is what makes this intervention especially special. It is also an economic focus on that activity, which generates income and is in support of the recovery of the person and the family. The two week program is complimented by a six month follow up. At the end of the first year, the expected outcome is one of steady recovery and stable income.
In December some of the members were given an opportunity to attend a rabbit husbandry training organized by The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Ngong. The training was inclusive of all the necessary skills that one would need to successfully rear rabbits and generate income from them. It was an end to end program from setting up, marketing, record keeping and everything in between. The participants are now implementing what they learnt on the True North shamba.
This was a festival held in August at Shalom Picnic Gardens. It aimed at raising awareness on the difficulties of reintegration of veterans with psychological war wounds. It was also a time of fun, meet and greet.
This is an ongoing therapeutic program, which started in September, designed to aid the veteran to express himself/herself through art. This is a time to use paint, colour and brushes to bring alive imagination, creativity and wellness. They also use the art as an income generating tool.
In September, True North had the privilege of being one of the exhibitors at the trade fair. This was a great opportunity to learn and grow especially from an economic point of view. We got to network and benchmark with many prominent agricultural experts. This created an avenue for the members to get a broader perception of income generating activities.
