As a human right as stated by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the constitution of Kenya, every person has the right to dignity. What better way of enjoying this right, than to have the opportunity to earn a living and provide for one’s family and self? This is the objective of the ‘learn and earn’ initiative. It is giving military veterans an opportunity to learn a skill e.g. technical skills of wiring or mechanics through an accredited institution or a skill like farming. One of our key ‘learn and earn’ projects is Rabbit husbandry. The military veterans are engaged and practically taught how to rear rabbits for profit. The rabbits are then sold for their meat or skin. The fur and skin is also tanned into leather and used to make crafts for sale. Giving a person the opportunity to have their independence and provide for themselves fosters this inherit right to dignity.
